Robot-assisted laparoscopic RADICAL prostatectomy (A.K.A. daVinci prostatectomy or robotic prostatectomy) is performed for patients with a diagnosis of PROSTATE CANCER. It is performed through 5-6 keyhole size incisions. Carbon dioxide gas is used to "insufflate" or fill up the abdomen to provide a working environment inside the body. A special robotic video camera and robotic instruments are placed inside the body through these dime-sized incisions. Dr. Shah controls all aspects of the robot from a surgeon's console. Ultimately the prostate is placed inside a bag and removed from one of the incision sites. The urinary tract is reconstructed with delicate sutures by bringing the bladder down to the urethra. A Foley catheter is left in place to allow the connection to heal properly.
Dr. Shah believes the goal of prostate cancer surgery should be first and foremost, removal of the cancer. However he strongly believes in quality of life preservation. Therefore, whenever possible, Dr. Shah employs nerve-sparing and continence-sparing techniques to improve his patients functional outcomes.
